Horizon Europe is the new funding scheme of the European Commission
from 2021-2027 providing €95 Billion in support of innovative technological
projects aiming to solve urgent real-world challenges. Alongside familiar
large consortium-based specific open calls,
€9.7Bn of these funds are aimed, via the European Innovation Council
(EIC), at integrated, agile support of breakthrough innovation from early
stage to start-up and market scale-up.
The EIC funding schemes offer funds ranging from €3M non-dilutive grant
for very early-stage breakthrough science – the EIC Pathfinder; and up to
€17.5M financing for close to market innovations and scaleup aimed at
startups/SMEs (Small Medium Enterprises) – the EIC Accelerator. The
Accelerator is made up of a non-dilutive grant of up to €2.5 Million and an
option for equity-funding of up to €15M more. Significant changes have
been introduced into the methods by which these funds are applied for as
compared to the previous Horizon2020 program.
The aim of the EIC is to help high risk, high potential innovative
technologies reach the market and de-risk future seed, series A, B or C
investment rounds once commercially launched.
However, these funding schemes are highly competitive, and submission
without professional assistance is not a good idea, and often leads to poor
results, wasted time and frustrations.
